For the first time in over twenty years, I hopped on a plane for a girlfriend getaway. Destination – Myrtle Beach where sun, sand and the promise of sunset chats awaited along with one of my very dear friends, Grace (whom you know also the Senior Editor of Second Season Travel!)
I honestly don’t know why I waited so long to take a girlfriend weekend. Marriage, raising kids, work, and an kaleidoscope of life events certainly filled my days. When you are in the thick of parenting, jetting off for a few days isn’t always feasible, either.
One of the many reasons I’m excited about embracing my second season of life is the opportunity to experience new things like a girlfriend getaway. It’s a journey that’s so good for your friendships and your soul!
Thanks to our gracious hosts at The Caravelle Resort and Myrtle Beach Tourism, Grace and I had the wonderful opportunity to explore North Myrtle Beach. We quickly discovered that this area was definitely a highly desirable spot for a great girlfriend getaway.
Location, Location, Location
For me, life is always better at the beach. I love everything about the ocean – the sights, sounds, sand and serenity. When you have a beach front hotel room with a gorgeous view of the ocean, life is even better!
Mornings were spent enjoying a freshly brew cup of coffee on our private patio. We were serenaded by the ocean, “ooh’d” over the gorgeous sunrise and had some lovely chats about our lives. Grace and I have been friends for many years, but we live in different states. Getting together for a dedicated weekend allowed us to deepen our friendship. There’s no better way to truly get to know your friends then having the opportunity to have great heart-to-heart conversations over a weekend with no distractions.
North Myrtle Beach, with its laid-back style and vibe, is an excellent, charming location. A great spot to spend a pleasant day with your best gal pal. The landscape is pleasing to the eye and there’s plenty to do and see within easy walking or driving distance.
Fresh air, wide open spaces, the sound of the waves, the warmth of the sand: no matter where you are at in North Myrtle Beach you are close to the ocean, local parks and even several gorgeous golf courses. If you love appreciating the delights of nature, this is definitely a blissful spot!
Nature enthusiasts can take things a step further with a visit to Brookgreen Gardens. Located in Murrels Inlet, South Carolina, this lovely conservation area brings art, nature and history together. The lovely Botanical Garden and AZA accredited Lowcountry Zoo are lovely to visit. Plan to spend the entire day exploring (dining options are available onsite.)
Animal lovers will also enjoy other one-of-a-kind experiences in the area including:
- the The Avian Conservation Center which provides medical care to injured birds of prey and shore birds, and through educational, research and conservation initiatives. Guests can enjoy a guided walking tour and flight demonstration. There’s also a variety of exhibits and programs throughout the year.
- T.I.G.E.R.S. Myrtle Beach Safari, a unique attraction offering Wild Encounters tours and Tiger viewings at their Preservation Station. Located on 50 acres and home to more than 130 wild animals, the animals here are center stage in this fully interactive, hands-on experience.
From local flea markets to the North Myrtle Beach Historical Museum, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the South Carolina beach culture.
Our girlfriend getaway happened to virtuously be on the same week as International Women’s Day, which we celebrated with a visit to Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum. Housed in a 1920s cabana-style villa, the museum has rotating art exhibits. You’ll also find an art studio, resource library, gift shop and a lovely ocean view. Viewing works from local artists is always a great way to see the area from a new point of view and to learn more about the history.
Add Brookgreen Gardens to your must-see list here, too, as it houses the first public sculpture garden in America and a wealth of cultural exhibits and programs year ’round. There are over a thousand works of art on the property with a stunning natural backdrop to enhance your viewing pleasure.
We could have spent an entire month at The Caravelle Resort and still found something new to do each day. When you want a break from the beach life, Myrtle Beach area is full of terrific entertainment venues and attractions for every interest.
Want to commemorate your stay with some fun selfies? You can certainly head to the beach for some stunning views but you’ll also have a great girlfriend giggle fest at Myrtle Beach Hollywood Wax Museum. Life-like wax figures give you the opportunity to get some fun, candid shots with your favorite celebs. Throughout the building, you’ll also find prop stations with things like hats, purses, awards and ponchos to help enhance your photos. It’s truly a hoot to go through and capture the moments with your best pals!
Another venue we truly enjoyed was watching the “Time Warp” show at the Carolina Opry. A true blast from the past with incredibly talented performers, this Broadway caliber show in North Myrtle Beach is one we’d love to see over and over! It’s a fantastic way to spend an evening celebrating your friendship and reminiscing with music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
If you want to add a little outdoor adventure to your girlfriend getaway, there’s plenty of options for zip-lining, jet-skiing, mini-golf, boat tours and even a Nascar racing experience in the area to choose from. And of course, there’s plenty of shopping opportunities, too!
Whatever you choose to do, North Myrtle Beach offers plenty of ways to relax, unwind and spend quality girlfriend time! Learn more about the area at VisitMyrtleBeach.com
